Worship

Christian worship gives all glory and honor, praise and thanksgiving to the holy, triune God.
We gather in worship to glorify the God who is present and active mong us – particularly through the gifts of Word and Sacrament.
We are sent out in service to glorify the same God who is present and active in the world.

Worship at Second Presbyterian Church

Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory and power to the triune God. In worship the people of God acknowledge God present in the world and in their lives. As they respond to God’s claim and redemptive action in Jesus Christ, believers are transformed and renewed. In worship the faithful offer themselves to God and are equipped for God’s service in the world. – Book of Order, W-1.1001

Worship at Second Presbyterian Church exists to bring glory and praise to God, giving people the opportunity to experience God’s presence and allowing them to respond to what God is doing in their lives and in the world.

Our vision for the worship life of Second Presbyterian Church is to:

Engage those who desire to deepen their relationship with God with the love and grace of God, experienced through creative and interactive worship;

Enjoy the benefit of gathering together as God’s people in community to celebrate what God has done, is doing, and will do in our lives;

Encourage people to grow and mature as disciples of Jesus through challenging, relevant, and applicable teaching of Scripture;

Equip followers of Christ to serve others and to share the love, grace, and transforming message of Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

To accomplish this vision, we believe that worship should be a joyful celebration of the people of God, bringing glory and praise to the Lord through:

  • the use of a variety of musical styles, from classical to modern;
  • the utilization of a wide assortment of musical instruments, played by musicians of varying levels and skills as an offering to God;
  • the incorporation of various artistic expressions in worship, from drama to dance, that reflect the different ways people engage with God’s Word and are awakened to God’s presence;
  • the participation and inclusion of all God’s people, especially in the music ministry of the congregation, without regard to ability;
  • the regular incorporation of children in a manner that affirms their value in the community of faith and in the Body of Christ;
  • the understanding that true worship happens when all of God’s people have the chance to engage and encounter God’s presence through worship that is accessible, meaningful, and expands our consciousness of the reality and grace of God.
